We started out the day running errands and installing a volume control at a theater customer’s house. We sent out a large mailing at the local post office and stopped at the hardware store for supplies. We got to the store and Garrett was busy manning the phones. He changed our sign out front and helped out in the install bay.. Well, he observed in the install bay.

Overall, we had a great day and I think that he left the shop with a little bit of a perspective on how the “real world” functions.

According to Dynamic Control’s (the makers of Dynamat) website, “Dynamat Xtreme is a patented, lightweight elastomeric butyl and aluminum constrained-layer vibrational damper.” That’s a mouthful! In English, It is a Butyl material with and aluminum backing. It’s purpose is to reduce vibrations and rattling.

Any object has a frequency at which it will naturally vibrate at. Take a door panel for example. When it is exposed to this “resonant frequency,” it too will vibrate. When you attach speakers to a metal door panel, for example, they will cause the door panel to vibrate. The louder the speakers play, the more serious the vibration.

This is where Dynamat comes in. Dynamat, when applied properly to the metal surface, changes the frequency at which it will resonate. It adds mass to the door making it much more difficult to cause a vibration. The result is a huge reduction (if not elimination) of rattles and noise.

We always recommend using a Dynamat Xtreme Door kit when installing new speakers. This allows us to treat the entire metal surface of each door and seal up many of the natural holes in the door panel. By sealing these gaps, we prevent a lot of the canceling effect that happens in standard installations. This further improves the speakers output and sound quality. At the very least, we highly advise every customer to use at least a Dynamat Xtreme speaker kit.

Another byproduct of having Dynamat applied is that it makes the car ride quieter. The door vibrates less and the material itself acts as a barrier for unwanted road noise. Now this is not to say that you will eliminate road noise. This is simply not realistic. But by using the proper amounts and the proper installation techniques, you can make your car ride a lot more quietly.

Dynamat can be used in most any application where you want to improve sound quality and reduce noise. Does your license plate rattle when your car hits a bass note? No problem. How about your trunk or hatch lid? Dynamat to the rescue!

Mobile Edge sells and installs only Dynamat Xtreme. While the original Dynamat is a bit cheaper, There is no comparison to the results. I’ve been involved in car audio since 1992 and I have to say, factory systems have definitely improved. Long gone are the days of the 3.5″ dash speakers in the GM or Dodge. Many systems are “amplified” and some even have iPod capabilities. Today’s factory radios sound pretty good, but I have never heard one that I felt couldn’t sound a whole lot better.

I think that many customers also realize that their systems could sound better. Problem is, the car manufacturers are making it very difficult to replace the factory radio. Integrated diagnostics, data connectivity, and the actual fit of the radio are big hurdles to overcome. Believe it or not, adapters, dash kits and harnesses are available to allow radio replacement in most newer vehicles. I will leave that to a future post. Today I want to talk about improving your vehicles overall sound and flexibility while maintaining the factory radio.

Keeping the factory radio

Shops like mine are selling a lot fewer in-dash radios than they used to. That has probably hurt many of the shops that did not learn how to “adapt.” By “adapt,” I mean to use their customer’s factory radios as a source for high performance sound.

At Mobile Edge, we are lucky to have many excellent vendors that make specialized integration products. Many of today’s radios require special handling if you are going to add external amplifiers, speakers and subs. We use high quality devices called “line level converters” to act as an interface between the factory radio and the aftermarket system. Perhaps one of the best is the 6ix for Memphis car audio. This device takes a 4 channel output from nearly any factory radio and converts it into a front, rear, and subwoofer outputs suitable for connection to a quality afttermarket amp. This device has special level matching to allow us to truly fine tune your new system.

Adding a good dose of power

Not long ago, good amplifier were generally BIG. This made for a lot of mounting issues. Many customers were not comfortable mounting an amplifier to a back seat or having it stick out a bit if we did an under seat mounting. Unfortunately, they had to make a choice between not doing the system, or dealing with some space issues. Not anymore! Companies like Memphis and Arc Audio have really stepped to the plate with smaller, high performance amplifiers.

The SC series from Memphis consists of three amplifiers: a 2 channel, 4channel and a monoblock sub amplifier. They all are exactly the same size: 10.5″ x 2″ x 8.5″. These amps are solid performers. They are made to exacting standards and will fit nearly anywhere. Designed with all of the wire connection on one side, they are an installer’s dream. Mount the 4 channel under the driver’s seat and the monoblock under the passenger seat and you have the powerehouse for a killer system.

But what if the Memphis SC series is still to big? We have the solution… The Arc Audio KS125.2 Mini. This amplifier puts out 250 watts of pure power and is just 8.5″ x 1.75″ x 4.75″!! It can be mounted under just about any seat imaginable! You need to see this amplifier to really understand how small it is. The Arc Mini eliminates the problem of not enough space.

Better speakers = Better sound

Speakers are a no-brainer. Upgrading your factory speakers and adding sound deadening to your doors will always make an improvement in sound quality. At Mobile Edge, we recommend that you go with a component speaker system for the very best sound. They start out in price at only a little more than a typical coax. Good bass is important in any system

The only part of the system that might cause you to lose some interior space is the subwoofer. But, here again, this is not nearly as bad as it was years ago.

There are tons of custom enclosures available that blend in with the cosmetics of your hatch, trunk, or the cab of your pickup. In many cases, you will never even know it is there. We have access to hundreds of custom enclosures covering most newer vehicles on the road today. And we have the best woofers to go in them. Yes, they are on display also!

Lets not forget about all of the other cool things that we can add: iPod integration, HD radio, satellite radio, bass restoration, standar mp3 player support, etc. If you want it, chances are, we can do it.

The bottom line is that your car can sound a LOT better than it does today and you do not have to sacrifice cosmetics, space, or the integrity of your vehicles electronics. Why would you want an auto dimming mirror in the first place?

Because mirror glare causes accidents. It is really that simple. When you are “blinded” by someone’s high beams in your rear view mirror, something called the Troxler Effect happens. This is when a bright light leaves you with after-images that remain on your retina. These after images can significantly reduce your reaction time. Auto dimming mirrors can nearly eliminate this after glare. Air bags and seat belts will help you in the event of an accident, but a quality auto-dimming mirror will help to prevent the accident from happening.

Mobile Edge has been the area’s leading service center for the installation and monitoring of these devices. We work with a company called Consumer Safety Technology (CST). CST is a very well respected provider of interlock devices (sometimes called Breathalyzer devices).

When a client is required to have a device installed, they first need to call CST at 1-877-777-5020. They set up their equipment leasing with CST and then CST contacts us to set up the installation. We perform the initial install and train the client on the workings of the device. It is actually very easy to use.

After the initial install, the state requires that the information contained in the units be transmitted to them. I would guess that this information includes any failed attempts to start the vehicle due to alcohol being sensed. We do this at our facility by swapping out the unit with one sent to us by CST. At the same time, we are required to inspect the installation for any obvious signs of tampering.

At the end of the term, Mobile Edge removes the equipment and sends it back to CST.

The process is very simple and we make it as painless as possible. Our fees are reasonable, we are very discrete, and we are flexible with scheduling. We do not answer any questions pertaining to the law or anyones’ particular circumstances. We are not qualified to do so. We will, however guide you through the initial process and describe to you in more detail how our process works. Funkwerk (formerly Raytel) has perfected the product. All units feature a very functional noise and echo canceling circuit that improves in car use and greatly reduces road noise.
