Special Dash Kit Allows Radio Upgrade in Pontiac G6
In my business, we talk a lot about “OEM Integration.” This generally means using the factory radio as the head unit and adding a high end system to it. It’s true that a high percentage of jobs are like that and in many cases, it make a lot of sense.
The opposite happens when you need to upgrade a radio in a problem vehicle. The Pontiac G6 uses the factory radio as the display for the vehicle’s information center. Things like “door ajar,” “trunk open,” temperature readings, and certain vehicle settings are all displayed on the factory radio. Take that radio out and all of these functions will no longer be available….. Unless you use a specialty dash kit.
We came across this problem this week when we had a customer that wanted to upgrade his factory radio. After a bit of research, we discovered that one of our suppliers makes a kit that addresses the problem. The kit includes a one line display and 3 buttons that allow control and feedback of the factory information center. The kit’s supplied harness connects the factory harness to the aftermarket radio and the display unit.
The result looked great and provided better quality sound and flexibility. The customer still has full control and functionality of his information center and a great new Eclipse radio to boot.

Your best bet is to find yourself a reputable mobile electronics store in your area to handle this job.
does anyone make a head unit that will display the information or is this the only way
Not that I am aware of and I truthfully don’t see any manufacturer putting that much R&D and tooling into a vehicle specific aftermarket radio.
