It might sound good, but it is far from great!

I’ve been involved in car audio since 1992 and I have to say, factory systems have definitely improved. Long gone are the days of the 3.5″ dash speakers in the GM or Dodge. Many systems are “amplified” and some even have iPod capabilities. Today’s factory radios sound pretty good, but I have never heard one that I felt couldn’t sound a whole lot better.

I think that many customers also realize that their systems could sound better. Problem is, the car manufacturers are making it very difficult to replace the factory radio. Integrated diagnostics, data connectivity, and the actual fit of the radio are big hurdles to overcome.

I was reading my RSS feeds yesterday (you are subscribed to the Mobile Edge Feed, aren’t you) and I found this article. Essentially, it states that iTunes is now the number 2 retailer of music in the US. Second only to Walmart and nudging BestBuy to 3rd. It goes on to say that iTunes will overtake Walmart by the end of the year in music sales.

This is an amazing statistic considering the service is not that old. It really outlines the fact that more and more people are using iPods and other MP3 devices for listening to their music.

This Saturday was a typical Saturday. The store was busy and we sold a lot of good stuff. One of our sales from this past Saturday was a customer who had recently bought a pair of Rockford Fosgate 15″ sub in a “custom” ported box. They were used and we assume that he bought them from a friend of acquaintance. He came to us to buy an amp and for us to do this installation is his nearly new vehicle.

Mobile Edge has been known as the place to go for quality car audio for nearly 15 years. “You guys sell the good stuff” is a comment that we hear often. Unfortunately, we also hear “I couldn’t afford the good stuff… I just went to Walmart instead… I didn’t want to spend a lot.” The problem with that is that you do not get any expertise when you make a purchase at an auto parts store, Cosco, Target, or Walmart. Truth is, you don’t get a lot of expertise at some of the national “technology” stores either. There is an easy solution to this….
