The Importance of Backup Camera Safety Systems

By Mitchell Schaffer

Backup Camera SafetyBackup camera safety solutions are one of our specialties here at Mobile Edge in Lehighton, Pennsylvania. These systems help you avoid running over a bicycle or skateboard while backing into your driveway or bumping into a parking curb or signpost while you’re parking. In this article, we’ll explain why having a camera on the back of your vehicle can save you thousands of dollars in repairs and prevent injuries to people around your vehicle.

What Is a Backup Camera Safety System?

Backup camera systems involve two key components. The first is a camera that is mounted on the rear of the vehicle. The camera should be located in a position that provides a wide field of vision so that the driver can see objects behind the corners of the vehicle.

The second element is a display solution that lets the driver see the camera image. In factory-installed systems, the image is usually displayed on the screen of the infotainment system in the dash. In aftermarket solutions, we can typically source and install interfaces that replicate the functionality of these OEM systems.

Other display options include aftermarket multimedia receivers with color displays, rearview mirrors with integrated displays or stand-alone monitors. These stand-alone solutions are great for commercial vehicles such as delivery vans, tow trucks and snowplows.

The cameras used in these systems provide a video output that is mirrored left to right. When installed properly, objects on the left side of the video display are behind the left side of the vehicle and objects on the right are on the right side. This configuration mimics what you’d see as you look into the rearview mirror.

Why Do We Need Backup Cameras?

Backup Camera Safety

Objects more than two feet tall can be completely concealed behind the trunk lid of a large sedan.

Our ability to see objects behind our vehicles is limited by our side-view and rearview mirrors. Smaller items can be hidden by the trunk of a car or the tailgate of an SUV or pickup truck.

In the case of SUVs and pickup trucks, it is possible for a small child to stand completely upright behind the vehicle and their presence be concealed from view in the rearview mirror.

How Do Backup Camera Systems Work?

If we have installed a safety camera system in your car, truck or SUV, there’s no interaction required on your part for the system to show you what’s behind the vehicle when backing up. We configure the display to trigger automatically when you put the transmission in reverse. You’ll always be able to see what’s behind you, and you’ll never have to remember to press any buttons or flick a switch.
