Introducing Our Custom Fabrication Facility!

It has been brought to our attention by our loyal followers that our posts have been a little sparse over the last few weeks. In an effort to dispel any rumors you may have heard, Mitch is not joining the circus, Bob has not started a Meatloaf cover band and Mike is not any closer to reaching the end of the internet. The truth is, over the last few weeks while managing the day-to-day operations, preparing for our busiest time of year, and providing the exceptional service and the experience that our clients have come to expect, we’ve been working on a little project. As you may already be aware, Mobile Edge has always produced top-level installations and we don’t believe in cutting corners. We pride ourselves on our craftsmanship and attention to detail. It is however our belief that there is always room for improvement. To that and without further ado or fanfare, please allow us to introduce, our NEW CUSTOM FABRICATION FACILITY. ( editors note: further fanfare may be sprinkled throughout )

When we made the decision to build a dedicated fabrication room there were a few things that we had to keep in mind. Safety, as with everything we do is paramount.  Another major concern, due to the physical limitations of our building, was space. We didn’t want to give up space in the primary installation bays or on the sales floor.

Airlines Run Throughout Installation Facility

The first upgrade we made was to run permanent air lines from the compressor to the bays and into what would become the fabrication shop. We did a little research and came to the conclusion that, although PVC was a popular ( and cheap ) solution, it wasn’t the safest. Although the likely hood that there would ever be an issue was small, if PVC lines are to crack, they explode. With a client’s vehicle, not to mention our techs or the client them-self in the bay, PVC was not an option. We decided to use a Maxline aluminum kit from RapidAir for the safety of everything and everyone in the bay. With connection points in each bay for air, the shop floor is free from hoses and there is no waiting in line to use air tools.

Dust Collection A Top Priority

Next, we installed a Penn State Industries Cyclone dust collection system. Although the wood work is done behind closed doors, all bets would be off as soon as we opened the door to walk though it. With the table saw and routers connected directly to the filtration system, airborne dust is reduced to almost zero.  This is absolutely critical since we do an insane amount of window tinting at our shop.  The Cyclone system ensures that all dust created by the routers and saws is captured.  Although the debris container and filters are in the fabrication room the motor and turbine were mounted above the room. To keep the system easy to use we implemented a remote control for the system so it can be turned on and off from within the fabrication shop.

Grizzly Table Saw, Porter Cable Routers, Woodpecker Lifts, Templates

From there it was on to the usual suspects. After the Grizzly table saw was set up, we built a table off the back of the saw to house dual Porter Cable routers in woodpecker lifts. These lifts are awesome. All of the bit changes and height adjustments can be made from above the table so changing bits and heights are a snap. The fact that there are two routers means we don’t have to stop to change bits for most applications. We also purchased all new templates for the routers making it easier and faster than ever for us to match the contours in vehicles or add creative flare to our custom installations. The key here for us was efficiency. With the saw blade and routers dropped below deck this area doubles as our main fabrication work bench. Planning…. it works!

Dedicated Area For Metal Fabrication

Across the room from the wood working area is where the sparks fly! With metal work an integral part to more and more of our installations we needed a dedicated area to safely and efficiently cut, weld, and grind steel. Not only does this keep sparks away from wood, glue and other chemicals, doing this type of fabrication here also prevents accidental “staring into the sun” by someone opening the door without eye protection.

At Mobile Edge we believe that if you want professional results you need the professional tools. Knowing what to do with them doesn’t hurt either.
